Is it a good idea to use glue-on molding to disguise severe water damage to bottom of sewing cabinet?
I’m in the middle of refinishing a sewing cabinet and need to do something with the bottom. It is missing many small pieces of the wood and using a wood filler would take forever and, in my experience, never takes the stain the same way as the rest of the piece. The damage is all around the cabinet and the matching stool and I would like to simply glue on wooden wall molding to cover the damage. The original cabinet had a maple stain with a three-inch redwood stain on the bottom which didn’t strip well anyway. Covering this up seems like a good option. What do you think?
I think you are thinkin right 
many times you can do what you are saying and make the piece very unique and fresh..putty almost never takes stain properly so by doing it the way you are thinking it will be much more uniform thus making it much better and saving a lot of time..practice with a scrap piece and try different stains to see the effect then go for it. good luck
i have to say i just remembered a project i did years ago..it was a heirloom hutch and my dad wanted it original as possible..i sanded the piece and saved the dust then mixed it with glue and used that to build up and entire corner that he had broke off (it was on the molding) when i was finished i stained it (after trying a few stains on a scrap piece) and you could not ever tell that it was even slightly damage..it even surprised me. so sometimes depending how much time you have etc it can be done but it did take a while because each layer i let dry for an hour and took about 10 layers..surprisingly the repaired section took the stain evenly…but the look on my dads face was priceless.
